St. Thomas the Apostle, has three great moments in the gospels. The first moment is when they are on their way to Bethany, he decides to go along with Jesus and die with him; this shows the great courage of Thomas. The second moment is at the last supper, when he asks Jesus to show us the way, and Jesus answers: ‘I am the way, the truth and the life”. Finally we find Thomas in a moment of doubt, our gospel today. He refuses to believe until he sees and touches he wounds of Jesus. Jesus shows him his wounds, and invites him to touch them. Thomas believes and makes a great act of faith. ‘My Lord and my God’. Thomas will go on to be a great apostle and will found a great church community in India – India is now sending missionaries to all parts of the world – in our own diocese we have two priests from India. Jesus adds one more sentence to the conversation; he says: ‘you believe because you have seen, blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe’. Here he is talking about each and everyone of us. Faith is not a question of seen, it is a question of listening to the voice of Jesus in the silence of our hearts. It is a wonderful gift from God. Today also is Divine Mercy Sunday. This feast day was designated by St. John Paul II not long before he died. As a young man Karol Wojtyla cultivated a strong devotion to Sr. Faustina Kowalski a young Polish nun who died in Krakow in 1938. Sr. Faustina was gifted with extraordinary experiences of the Lord Jesus. We had the privilege on our parish pilgrimage in 2007 of visiting the convent where Sr. Faustina was, as a young nun and we visited her tomb as well. The most famous of the visions she had was the Lord revealing his most Sacred Heart from which radiated rays of light, both red and white. She saw this as a radiant force of Divine Mercy. There may be moments in our lives when our faith is very strong, but there will be moments when our faith is challenged. We remember St. Peter, when he was sinking, he was desperate and he called out to Jesus. He did not have to be afraid, Jesus was there; Jesus is always there. So let us remember in the moments of darkness and lonliness in our lives, Jeus is always there. We only have to reach out to Him.
